A rechargeable battery, also known as a battery or accumulator battery, is an energy storage system consisting of several electrically interconnected battery cells. Each cell uses electrochemical reactions to store energy and release it when required. These cells are equipped with electrodes that are surrounded by a liquid or paste electrolyte and enable a chemical reaction that releases energy in the form of electricity.

Structure of a rechargeable battery:

  • Battery cells: individual cells that store energy through electrochemical processes
  • Electrolyte: a substance (liquid or paste-like) that surrounds the electrodes and enables the electrochemical reaction to take place
  • Accumulator: an entire storage system consisting of several cells that releases the stored energy when required
  • Battery string: several accumulators or batteries are combined to form a battery string
