Innovative control cabinet solutions for water supply safety

In a current customer application, Wöhrle installed a 60 V DC UPS system in a compact wall-mounted cabinet measuring 1,000 × 1,000 × 300 mm. The system was designed and built for the protection of a waterworks in the area of measurement technology and for control valves. In modified applications, such systems can also be designed and used in machine and control cabinet construction according to customer specifications. This product offers interesting features that clearly set it apart from comparable systems.
DC UPS controller/power supply unit
Proven Wöhrle technology is used as power supply units/DC UPS controllers, which are connected to an input voltage of 3 ph at L1, L2, L3 and PE. The output voltage is 60 V DC with a rated power of 33 A. The rated power is divided into the rated power required by the customer for the application and for the charging current.
Energy storage
The 60 V battery system was integrated into a high-quality battery rack for separate installation. As energy storage - specially calculated for the application - 5 × 12 V lead-gel batteries are connected in series to 60 V DC. The battery block delivers a capacity of 101 Ah. According to customer specifications, sealed and maintenance-free stationary block batteries were used. The sealed stationary and long-life block batteries are designed for an extended service life. They have a service life of approx. 12 years (at 20 to 22 °C) and are therefore designed for a long service life of the system. As a result, the surface load of the battery system was also kept very low: the total weight is only approx. 170 kg. This means that the system can be installed cost-effectively even in very confined spaces.
End-of-charge voltage
The final charging voltage for the 5 × 12 V lead-gel energy storage systems connected in series is 69 V DC in this application.
Decoupling diode
Diodes have been integrated for decoupling in order to avoid possible reverse voltages.
Circuit breaker
According to customer specifications, outgoing circuits were designed and integrated on miniature circuit breakers for the DC outputs on the secondary side. Five B6A miniature circuit-breakers (automatic circuit-breakers), double-pole for DC applications including auxiliary contact, were installed in each case. A further five B4A miniature circuit-breakers were also installed,
double-pole including auxiliary contact. In order to protect the smallest consumers, five additional B2A double-pole circuit breakers, each including an auxiliary contact, were used, which trip immediately in the event of a short circuit and also have an integrated bi-metal strip for thermal shutdown.
Battery isolator
The installed components were integrated into the DIN rails used. To disconnect the battery and as protection, an NH isolator was integrated as a battery fuse with 25 A as an outgoing circuit to the battery system.
Cabling
The cabling inside the compact wall-mounted enclosure is routed in the cable duct so that all cables can be laid in accordance with regulations. In accordance with customer specifications, the outlets were integrated into the underside of the compact wall-mounted enclosure via PG cable glands. The outlet for the cable set for the energy storage unit was also integrated on the underside. The cable set was a 4 m/10 mm2 assembled with ring terminals/conductor end sleeves.
Signaling
In addition to intelligent charging technology according to the I/U characteristic of the DC UPS control unit, which has an integrated display for reading the current status, additional signaling via LED displays for operation, fault/collective fault was integrated into the control cabinet door.
Operation
A main switch is integrated into the front panel of the wall cabinet, which can be used to quickly switch off the system if required.
The Wöhrle DC UPS systems can be assembled for different applications specifically to meet the requirements of the customer's application. Our project department prepares all the necessary documentation such as circuit diagrams/operating instructions for release to the end customer.
